European or American working life?

Which is better? Western Europeans work fewer hours have more vacation time and get free health care. On average most jobs in Western Europe pay more than similar roles in the U.S with the exception of executive and board room jobs. It is also now easier for low paid workers in Western Europe to reach executive and board room positions than it is in the U.S going against the traditional ‘land of opportunity’ ideal.

However the U.S system has many benefits. Road, rail, and air travel is superior as is the service industry. Factories and farming is more efficient and rates of alcoholism and drug abuse are much lower in the U.S.

I’m an American who worked in Europe as well as the US.

In Europe, there were somethings that I liked more than the US and some I liked less. Europeans definitely have a better attitude towards vacation. Two week vacations seemed to be the norm over there and the attitude was take all your vacation and enjoy it. In the US, the attitude towards vacation is a bit more antagonistic. Sure, everyone is encouraged to go on vacation, but no one takes more than a week (unless you are getting married or starting a family). It is just one of those things.

Europe also has ridiculous tax rates which, to me, is an incentive NOT to work. I think that is a reason why people are so happy taking time off from work. In America, the taxes are lower so you keep more of what you make. Hence, the more you work, the more you make (generally speaking). That is one reason why Americans work so much. Plus, from an overall economic standpoint, the more your workers work the better the economy as a whole.

In general, the US is far more business friendly than most of Europe. Access to capital, labor movement, etc…all that is easier in the US. Dont get me wrong though. I think the European system has its strengths. Happy workers are productive workers. But overall, I appreciate the US system more.

If socialism works so well in europe, why do they have so many labor strikes?

I am studying abroad in spain and I wanted to take a train into southern france this weekend but I could not because there was a huge french railway strike. The other weekend, I booked a ticket to travel to england but stupid british airways had this annoying strike and my ticket got eaten..that is, it got cancelled and I did not get my money back. This not just happened in france and england, it also happened in spain, germany, and even in italy as well.

Isnt european socialism supposed to make workers happy? It seems like they strike all the time here.
lol..i never said europe was a country..but as a continent, europe has a socialistic democracy in common..

They’re not striking against socialism. Striking essentially is socialism; it’s the workers exercising control of the means of production. The reason you don’t have as many strikes in the US is because people are afraid that if they stand up for their rights, they’ll be fired.

where can I get a cheap ticket to europe over the summer??

I am trying to get to Italy and France over the summer and I am aware that flights to Europe over the summer are waaaaaay more expensive than those in the fall. Since I was planning to purchase a rail pass anyway can anyone tell me what are “cheaper” cities to fly into and then rail my way to my destinations. Or any other suggestions for getting to Europe for under $900 over the last week in July –

Thanks

I really don’t know hot to get to europe for under 900, but i can suggest doing a pacge deal, to make tuour total cost cheaper. Its through Ef College Break. All you pay for is lunch and dinner, since the package tour includes round trip airfare and hotels and a tour director. I liked it because you don’t have to worry about anything and just have fun. You should check it out. I think its only for people 18-26 though since it is a student subsidized travel thing. So basically, you do the tourist thing one morning with them, and then you are free to explore and experience. Oh, and if you decide to use them I recently got a promo code for them at this fair. it is HESSELN1188 and it saves you like an extra $100. You should see if it works for you. I had lots of fun on my trip. (I went to Italy!) You just book online. Um, just google ef college break and you should find it. Its the cheapest way to travel, I’ve found so far-and I’ve looked for a long time. I don’t know if that was what you were looking for, or if it helps, but that is what I did.

Why doesn’t Britain have high speed trains?

I’ve just got back from Germany and i went on an ICE train and it was brilliant and having done a little research we seem to be the only country without a proper high-speed rail network (although I don’t think the US has one?). Plus all the trains arrive on time in Germany apparently (kind of predictable). I don’t know much about the rail network or the “benefits” of privatisation but it seems to me that we have a crap network compared with Europe – even the French can do it for god sake.

Is it just down to cost or are there other factors i.e. no demand for it.

Britain’s Inter City services do travel at speeds of up to 125 m.p.h. as opposed to the 186 mph of French TGVs and German ICEs. British governments have never invested money on the scale of those European countries with higher speed networks, but I don’t think our network is “crap” at all. Firstly the British railway network is one of the densest of any country except perhaps the Netherlands, with many rural lines as well as commuter and Inter City main lines. Our services also tend to be very high frequency compared with most countries. Manchester to London every half hour in 2 hours
10 minutes isn’t bad at all when you think that most airlines ask you to check in two hours before their flights; there are 6 trains per hour between Brighton and London, 3 trains per hour between Leicester and London; many of our railway lines are running at urban metro type frequencies. If you take a close look at the French railway system off the brilliant TGV network, you’ll see closed rural lines and services between
various provincial cities running at 3 to 4 hour frequencies where the equivalent services in the U.K. run every 30 minutes. The questioner states that all the trains arrive on time in Germany; well of course they don’t but they are a few percentage points above our 90% national average punctuality rate. We do need some higher speed main lines
and more investment in our rail system through longer franchises, but as someone who several times per week, uses and depends on it to get me all over the U.K. I’m broadly satisfied; most of my journeys are punctual and I am able to get to some very rural and out of the way places by train too.

Buying rail tickets online, help please?

I need to travel this Saturday via rail.
Advertisments i have seen recomend thetrainline.co.uk, as you can often make a considerable saving.

My questions are …
How do i purchase my tickets from the site?
If i purchased today would i be able to travel on Saturday?
Will i be sent paper tickets in the post? Or is there some other form of service due to my late booking?

Or should i just pay the little extra and purchase at the station?

If i book my ticket for travel today

You won’t get cheap tickets this close to booking, if you want to try avoid trainline and use train operating companies (TOC) website.

Personally I would advise going into a booking office today if possible and see whats available they will guide you through journey in the most reliable manner – weekend rail travel is often fraught with engineering work
