European or American working life?

Which is better? Western Europeans work fewer hours have more vacation time and get free health care. On average most jobs in Western Europe pay more than similar roles in the U.S with the exception of executive and board room jobs. It is also now easier for low paid workers in Western Europe to reach executive and board room positions than it is in the U.S going against the traditional ‘land of opportunity’ ideal.

However the U.S system has many benefits. Road, rail, and air travel is superior as is the service industry. Factories and farming is more efficient and rates of alcoholism and drug abuse are much lower in the U.S.

I’m an American who worked in Europe as well as the US.

In Europe, there were somethings that I liked more than the US and some I liked less. Europeans definitely have a better attitude towards vacation. Two week vacations seemed to be the norm over there and the attitude was take all your vacation and enjoy it. In the US, the attitude towards vacation is a bit more antagonistic. Sure, everyone is encouraged to go on vacation, but no one takes more than a week (unless you are getting married or starting a family). It is just one of those things.

Europe also has ridiculous tax rates which, to me, is an incentive NOT to work. I think that is a reason why people are so happy taking time off from work. In America, the taxes are lower so you keep more of what you make. Hence, the more you work, the more you make (generally speaking). That is one reason why Americans work so much. Plus, from an overall economic standpoint, the more your workers work the better the economy as a whole.

In general, the US is far more business friendly than most of Europe. Access to capital, labor movement, etc…all that is easier in the US. Dont get me wrong though. I think the European system has its strengths. Happy workers are productive workers. But overall, I appreciate the US system more.

european railway tickets

If socialism works so well in europe, why do they have so many labor strikes?

I am studying abroad in spain and I wanted to take a train into southern france this weekend but I could not because there was a huge french railway strike. The other weekend, I booked a ticket to travel to england but stupid british airways had this annoying strike and my ticket got eaten..that is, it got cancelled and I did not get my money back. This not just happened in france and england, it also happened in spain, germany, and even in italy as well.

Isnt european socialism supposed to make workers happy? It seems like they strike all the time here.
lol..i never said europe was a country..but as a continent, europe has a socialistic democracy in common..

They’re not striking against socialism. Striking essentially is socialism; it’s the workers exercising control of the means of production. The reason you don’t have as many strikes in the US is because people are afraid that if they stand up for their rights, they’ll be fired.

help, whats the best euro railway?

im travelling to europe later this year like end of november to december and i am going through germany, france and austria but all of these euro rail websites are unspecific and dont really help at all…. any suggestions for a good website or something? via australia

Each country has it’s own national railway. The people selling the eurail passes do not run the railroads – they’re just ticket agents. It is often cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets directly from the railraods themselves rather than a pass. This is especially true if you can buy tickets in advance to take advantage of discounts available and will be taking high speed trains rather than the slower regional trains. There are additional reservations fees / supplements to pay with the passes if you use the higher speed trains or night trains.

For Germany, the railroad site (in English) is: http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml . Austria: http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp . France: http://www.sncf.com/en_EN/flash/ . Either the German or the Austrian site is good for determining schedules throughout Europe.

europe rail cards europe rail cards
How much money would i need to take with me for traveiling around europe for three weeks.?

I do live in europe and can get a rail card for £250 Unlimited travel so i can get around but not sure how much spending money i should take? any one done this before.
Its only for a mounth by the way.

Depends on how you spend and what type of Hotel you plan on staying in: Lodging if not in Hostel on averge 50 Euro per night
Food 21 Euro per day (at least)
Drinks 6 Euro per day
Entertainment 20 Euro per day
Now you can offset that by taking the night trains and seeing the cities by day and you will save almost half of your budget

where can I get a cheap ticket to europe over the summer??

I am trying to get to Italy and France over the summer and I am aware that flights to Europe over the summer are waaaaaay more expensive than those in the fall. Since I was planning to purchase a rail pass anyway can anyone tell me what are “cheaper” cities to fly into and then rail my way to my destinations. Or any other suggestions for getting to Europe for under $900 over the last week in July –

Thanks

I really don’t know hot to get to europe for under 900, but i can suggest doing a pacge deal, to make tuour total cost cheaper. Its through Ef College Break. All you pay for is lunch and dinner, since the package tour includes round trip airfare and hotels and a tour director. I liked it because you don’t have to worry about anything and just have fun. You should check it out. I think its only for people 18-26 though since it is a student subsidized travel thing. So basically, you do the tourist thing one morning with them, and then you are free to explore and experience. Oh, and if you decide to use them I recently got a promo code for them at this fair. it is HESSELN1188 and it saves you like an extra $100. You should see if it works for you. I had lots of fun on my trip. (I went to Italy!) You just book online. Um, just google ef college break and you should find it. Its the cheapest way to travel, I’ve found so far-and I’ve looked for a long time. I don’t know if that was what you were looking for, or if it helps, but that is what I did.
